Course Introduction

The Southeast Regional Transplant Summit (the "Summit") brings together leaders in the field of transplantation, including those who care for patients pre- and post transplant, to share the latest scientific advances in the perioperative care of solid organ transplant patients and strives to facilitate the multidisciplinary adoption of new research results and practice guidelines. The Summit features didactic and video-based presentations on current research as well as panel discussions and interactive debates on new and evolving advances in technology and practice. Participants will engage in question-and-answer sessions and learn from key opinion leaders in the field of transplantation. Breakout sessions for focused learning are available in the afternoon pertaining to kidney, liver, lung, multidisciplinary care, and pediatric multi-organ. The Summit is a unique program tailored to meet the demands of today's busy healthcare providers.

Course Directors

Debra Sudan, MD, is a transplant surgeon who has practiced at Duke for 17 years and currently serves in the role of Division Chief for the Solid Organ Abdominal Transplant programs.  She was instrumental in improving the quality and outcomes of the kidney and liver transplant programs through her surgical expertise, recruitment of gifted colleagues, and reorganization of the program structure.  In addition to leading top-tier programs in terms of post-transplant outcomes, she has initiated pediatric liver transplantation and intestine transplantation in both children and adults since arriving at Duke.  These programs have transformed the Duke program into one of the few programs in the country that can address virtually all transplant needs.  Her research interests and research funding focus on intestine transplantation including the development of biomarkers and optimizing graft preservation.  She has also led numerous clinical trials of novel immunosuppressive regimens to improve outcomes in liver and kidney transplantation.

John Reynolds, MD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine. He also practices as a Pulmonologist and a Transplant Pulmonologist with Duke Health. His areas of specialty include lung disease, lung transplant evaluation and care, multi-organ transplant evaluation and care, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary fibrosis and interstitial lung disease, pulmonary arterial hypertension, and sarcoidosis. Dr. Reynolds has been the medical director of the Duke Lung Transplant Program since 2012 and has served on OPTN Lung Committee from 2020-2023 and OPTN Lung Review Board from 2023-2025.
