COO, Board Member / NACD Directorship 100™ / TEDxNaples/ 2025 Presidential Leadership Scholar/ Chair, NACD Nashville
Standing up a new medical school from scratch while serving on a public company board teaches you something most executives learn only in theory: governance and operations are the same discipline, just viewed from different seats at the table.
As COO of the Thomas F. Frist Jr. College of Medicine at Belmont University — one of the few newly chartered MD-granting institutions in the country — the daily work is building the infrastructure, governance architecture, and operational discipline that a highly regulated, mission-critical institution requires from day one. Every early decision carries lasting consequence. That reality sharpens board judgment in ways that case studies don't.
As Chair of NACD Nashville, the work extends beyond the boardroom into the broader Tennessee governance community. The chapter has built a programming calendar that brings national-caliber conversations to local directors — the AI Governance in Health Care Forum convened at Vanderbilt Owen with EY, HCA Healthcare, and Microsoft; a CEO Readiness event featuring Marshall Goldsmith; a Women's History Month program in collaboration with the Smithsonian American Women's History Museum; and sessions on digital assets, M&A oversight, and AI strategy for boards. The goal is straightforward: Tennessee's directors should have access to the same governance conversations happening in New York and Washington.
On the governance side: Independent Director of WD-40 Company (NASDAQ: WDFC), Audit and Finance Committees. 2025 NACD Directorship 100 honoree. 2024 Savoy Most Influential Corporate Director. 2024 Corporate Directors Forum Director of the Year: Emerging Board Leader. Named a featured governance voice in Stuart Levine's Planet Governance series on AI oversight, cybersecurity, and the next generation of board leadership.
The operating career behind it: Fender Musical Instruments ($340M to $1B+ in revenue), Harley-Davidson York (largest vehicle assembly facility, $100M transformation, Industry Week Best Plant 2013), ABB/Thomas & Betts (12 factories, three countries, U.S. P&L). Naval Academy graduate. Duke Fuqua MBA. 2025 Presidential Leadership Scholar. Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel — 15 years, combat-decorated.
