Children, Family & Homeschool Programs

Nature Storytime | Thursdays, Sept. 5-Nov. 21, 10:30 am

Free. Drop-in activity for adults and children together; recommended for children ages 3-6.
Meet in the Charlotte Brody Discovery Garden Story Circle.

Enjoy the outdoors with a short story read aloud in the Gardens, followed by a related activity or garden walk.

 

Family Garden Walks | first Saturday of the month Aug.-Dec., 9-9:45 am

Free for adults and children together; all ages. Meet at the Gothic Gate.
Discover new places in the Gardens as you learn about the many things that live here, with a different theme each month.

Discovery Drop-In | Tuesdays, Sept. 10-Oct. 22, 3-5 pm

Free. Drop-in activity for adults and children together; all ages.
Meet in the Charlotte Brody Discovery Garden.

Choose from a variety of garden and nature exploration activities to do with your child. Staff will provide options and demonstrate how to use materials in our hands-on outdoor learning space.

 

Meet the Keepers | Thursdays, Sept. 19-Oct. 24, 2-3 pm

Free. Drop-in activity for adults and children together; all ages.
Plan your visit to the Gardens to include a stop at the Charlotte Brody Discovery Garden on Thursdays and meet staff members that specialize in bees, plants and chickens.
- Bees with Nick Schwab on Thursdays, Sept. 19 & Oct. 10, 2-3 pm.
- Plants with Jason Holmes on Thursdays, Sept. 26 & Oct. 17, 2-3 pm.

Naturalist Classes
Join other homeschool students in Duke Gardens to explore the natural world and learn in small, exploratory classes.

Bird Celebration | Monday, Sept. 16

Discover birds that live in Duke Gardens, from ducks to migrating songbirds, and practice birding together.


Edible Botany | Monday, Oct. 14

Learn about plant parts and classification as we taste our way through the edible plants of Duke Gardens.

Ages 5-6: 10:30-11:30 am (adult chaperone recommended).
Ages 7-9: 10:30 am-noon.
Fee per class: $10 per child; 20% Duke Gardens member discount.

 

Artists in the Gardens Workshops
Hone your observation skills and express yourself as we investigate the garden, make connections, learn about art-making and create our own art with different media.

Colorful Plants | Monday, Sept. 23, 10 am-noon

Find a rainbow of colors in flowers and other plant parts in Duke Gardens for artistic inspiration and a pigment source.


Landscapes | Monday, Oct. 21, 10 am-noon

Practice framing your view as we use perspective and composition to create landscapes based on Duke Gardens views.

Fee per class: $20 per child; 20% Duke Gardens member discount.

 

Family Vegetable Gardening Workshop | Saturday, Sept. 21, 10 am-noon

For adults and children together; all ages. Meet in the Charlotte Brody Discovery Garden.
Fee: $15 per child; 20% Duke Gardens member discount.

Discover the world of winter vegetable gardening. Learn what edible plants are right for the season in your setting. Each participant will get two plants to take home.

 

Family Workshop: Animals in the Garden | Saturday, Oct. 12, 10 am-noon

For adults and children together; all ages. Meet in the Charlotte Brody Discovery Garden.
Fee: $15 per child; 20% Duke Gardens member discount.

Discover how birds, insects, worms and other animals can help your garden grow. Make a habitat to attract native pollinators to your garden.

Festivals & Special Events

Blooming with Books | Saturday, Sept. 14, 10 am-1 pm

Free. Drop-in activity for adults and children together; all ages.
Throughout Duke Gardens. This event takes place outside and will be canceled in the event of rain or inclement weather.

Join Duke Gardens, Durham’s Partnership for Children, and other community partners in Duke Gardens for a reading celebration. Free children’s books, activities for all ages, story tellers, readings by local authors, and more! Bring a blanket and a picnic and spend the day reading together and exploring the garden.

 

Harvest Festival | Sunday, Oct. 20, 1-4 pm

Free. Drop-in activity for adults and children together; all ages.
Meet in the Charlotte Brody Discovery Garden.

Celebrate the bounty of autumn with a festival of activities, music, demonstrations and more, led by Duke Gardens and other local groups.

 

Mallarmé Chamber Players Family Concert | Sunday, Oct. 20, 1-2 pm

Free. Drop-in event.
For adults and children together; all ages. Meet in the Doris Duke Center.

 

A Festival of Fabulous Mums | Sunday, Nov. 3-Tuesday, Nov. 5

Free. Drop-in event for adults and children together; all ages. In the Doris Duke Center.
Sunday, Nov. 3, 12-5 pm. Monday, Nov. 4, 9 am-5 pm. Tuesday, Nov. 5, 9 am-5 pm.

Dazzling displays of show chrysanthemums grown by the Central Carolina Chrysanthemum Society! Vote for your favorite, enjoy the arts and crafts and take a mum tour in the Gardens. Mum Society members will be on hand to give you tips on growing these spectacular flowers. Rare spider mums, spoon tip mums, quilled blooms, from delicate to gigantic, it is an explosion of color.

 

The 5th Annual Fall for Orchids Show | Friday, Nov. 8-Sunday, Nov. 10

Free. Drop-in event for adults and children together; all ages. In the Doris Duke Center.
Friday, Nov. 8, 1-4 pm. Saturday, Nov. 9, 9 am-5 pm. Sunday, Nov. 10, 9 am-4 pm.

You will be amazed by the color, shape and fragrance of these exotic plants and overwhelmed by the displays. Hundreds of blooming orchids grown by Orchid enthusiasts from across the southeast U.S., arranged in lush, fragrant, garden-like settings. The show, by members of the Triangle Orchid Society, is sanctioned by the American Orchid Society and will include judged plants of many species and varieties.
Free drop-in demonstrations and workshops on practical orchid potting, mounting and maintaining.
Plants available for purchase from several vendors.

 

Winter Wonderland Festival | Sunday, Dec. 8, 2-4 pm

Free for Duke Gardens members; $5 per child for non-members.
For adults and children together; all ages. Meet in the Doris Duke Center.

Gather your family together and celebrate the season with winter-themed crafts, storytelling, cookie decorating, festive music and our resident snowperson, Snowflake.

Explore how plants, people and other animals live during winter at this afternoon of discovery, fun activities and performances presented by Duke Gardens and other local groups.
