Course Introduction
The Duke Transplant Advanced Practice Provider Symposium (“APP Symposium”) is an educational conference dedicated to healthcare professionals involved in solid organ transplantation, with an emphasis on the comprehensive care and long-term management of transplant recipients. The symposium provides updates on current clinical practices, explores emerging trends and innovations in transplantation, and highlights projects and initiatives led by transplant professionals from institutions nationwide.
Open to all members of the transplant care team, the APP Symposium brings together transplant coordinators, nurses, nurse clinicians, transplant physicians, transplant surgeons, transplant pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals committed to improving the care of solid organ transplant patients. Nationally recognized, the symposium welcomes participants from more than 40 transplant centers and organizations across the country. Attendees benefit from expert-led presentations, interactive case-based learning, updates on the latest medications and research developments, and evidence-based approaches that support outstanding patient care and outcomes.
Course Directors
Lindsay Powell, DNP, MSN, ACNPC-AG, FNP-C
Lindsay Powell began her career as a pediatric nurse before earning her Master of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice, with dual certifications in Family and Acute Care. Since 2016, she has worked as a nurse practitioner in abdominal transplant surgery at Duke University Hospital, where she is the APP team lead. Lindsay previously participated on the ASTS ATP committee and is actively involved in the ASTS Fellowship Training Committee and the AST APP COP Executive Committee as co-chair and upcoming chair. Lindsay was a Duke Johnson & Johnson Nurse Leadership Fellow, where she led a health transformation project focused on enhancing APP career development and retention. She is currently engaged in research on burnout and well-being among transplant APPs.
McKenzie Johnston, PA-C
McKenzie Johnston, referred to as Mack by her work fam, proudly works as a PA-C with the Duke Abdominal Transplant team since 2019. She is an active member of ASTS - certified as an ATP - and loves attending Transplant-specific conferences whenever she can (especially out of state!). Her work-related passion projects include post-op delirium, for which she helped develop a specific risk assessment tool tailored to post-liver transplant patients, and updating patient's 'Problem List'. McKenzie oversees the self-scheduling process for her dynamic APP-heavy transplant team and is co-director of the Duke Transplant APP Symposium.

Learning Objectives
Solid organ transplantation is an ever-changing and complex specialty of medicine. The objectives of this program are to promote education on medical and surgical topics in heart, lung, and abdominal transplantation; explore the role of the APPs and other healthcare professionals in the transplant community; and review ongoing quality improvement and research projects related to transplantation.
